growing up

Thursday, September 29, 2005

So I bought a house this week, signed the last signature just a few minutes ago. The date of posession is the 28th, and I'm looking forward to it. I'll post some pictures of it when I get a chance to take some, the ones on mls.ca are awful.

s(e)ars

Walking back to the bus stop after seeing a movie I noticed this humourous Sears sign, which I snapped a picture with on my cell phone. Funnier yet, the same size sign on the other side of the building was also missing the E.

francais? non.

Sunday, September 25, 2005

I was surfing around cbc.ca today and I noticed an article on Michaƫlle Jean and her decision to give up her French citizenship, which she gained when she married her French husband.
Good move, I say. If you're going to be representing the Queen of England, you've got no business being French too. Not to mention the fact that the Governor General (I really think that when a woman is at the post it should be Governess General, that sounds very cool) is the Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian forces, she should be Canadian first and only.
Now I know that she was born in Haiti, I'm not sure if she holds that citizenship, or if she can give it up. Of course citizenship is really just a notion these days, it's not like her being a French citizen would compromise her ability to do her job, but I still believe that she made the right move.

systemically down

Friday, September 23, 2005

Tonight was the night of the System of a Down/Mars Volta concert. The two tickets I had were originally for Travis and I, but it ended up he forgot about it and had to go to a soccer game instead. So I called up Jon, and he drove in and we attended the concert. Some 'prog-rock' (?) band called Hella (I think) opened, and they were.... weird. Lots of noise, people playing over each other with no real discernable 'songs'.

Next up was Mars Volta, and the crowd seemed very excited for them to come out and play. They were amazing, and even did a few songs from Deloused. Drunkenships I especially enjoyed. I was a bit sad they didn't play Televators, I was really looking forward to hearing that one live.

Nearly 40 minutes later, the curtain goes up and then System of a Down takes the stage. They opened with BYOB, and played straight for almost an hour and a half. All the great songs, some I didn't recognise. I'm not 'down' with their new cd yet, as I haven't got around to buying it. I would have enjoyed Chop Suey more if Serge's voice was actually audible. Why must everyone sing at the top of their lungs to songs that they know the words to? Also, there was this girl who was sitting beside me for the first two bands, then standing beside me for System. Her version of dancing seemed to be bouncing up and down, and holding her hands out infront of her plaintively while singing off-key to the band.

As always, click on the pictures for a larger view. It was one hell of a concert, and now I'm all-kinds of tired.

about time

Sunday, September 18, 2005

I'd say that my posting frequency has decreased, though I've never been that frequent with the updates anyways. Perhaps I could say it this way: Frequency = events over time. I've been hanging out at Nadien's place, and watching my fair share of movies and tv shows on dvd. Invader Zim = awesome.
Right, so the Revolution controller. I first saw it late at night while sleepy, and admittedly wasn't too impressed. I was a bit worried about how I'd play zelda with that. BUT. Then I read an awesome article that cube.ign.com has on the controller, and now I'm really excited about it. Said controller is pictured below.

It sure looks like Nintendo took some design cues from Apple, which is never a bad thing. Combining the left analogue-stick 'nunchuku' add on, will make for a real seamless and inutitive control scheme for any game, first-person-shooter games especially. But there's awesome potential there for any game, as the motion-sensitive controller is like a super-intuitive right analogue stick, only better.

Anyways, I think that ign.com article will convince anyone who initially thought "What a stupid thing." to at least be interested in trying it out. After all, the last major change to a game system controller was the analogue stick (Nintendo64), and even that wasn't a 'new' thing. This motion sensitive thing should be pretty neat.

five alive

Thursday, September 15, 2005

Alright, so I was surfing over at boingboing and happened across this tidbit.
" Gillette has announced a five-blade razor"
Well not entirely surprising, it is still rather absurd. And there are actually, six blades. One on the back, referred to as a 'trimmer blade'. Take a gander:

In other news, I've somehow gotten sick and have stayed home from work today.

I am 82% Asshole/Bitch.
Total Asshole or Bitch!
I am one of those people that love to hear the sound of their voice. That and my lousy attitude make for a mixture as toxic next-day mexican-dinner ass-drip.

Apple revealed the details of the newest iPod incarnation, the nano. It's to replace the mini, and is flash-based. Plus it comes in black. I mean just look at it...

Anyone want to buy a gently-used 4G mini?

when the power's out, in the heart of man

So the power went out at the branch today, around 1:45. It tried to come on 2 or 3 times, but to no avail. What'd that mean? Locking clients out and laughing at them as they read the sign on the door that says 'closed due to power outage' and then continue to knock, or yank on the handle. So I got to leave at 3:45 or so, which was nice and all, except it was prime-time for highschool and university kids to go home, sothe buses were PACKED.
I finally got my Diesel Sweeties bag in the mail! See?

And now I have to catch a bus for my class :P

out of labour

Monday, September 05, 2005

So how did I spend my Labour day you ask? Allow me to itemize it.
1. Slept in some (enjoyed the novelty that can only come with sleeping in on a Monday)
2. Woke up, watched some tv/internet
3. Threw some laundry in the machine
4. Called my parents, as there had been some discussion about them picking me up and taking me out there. They didn't, because they'd been to Steinbach that day for Harvest Days
5. Spent some time cleaning my room
6. Ironed some shirts
7. Walked out for some groceries
8. Various other incidental things
9. Waited
10. Going to bed early tonight
That's about it. Nadine and I made plans to see The Exorcism of Emily Rose sometime this week, we weren't sure if it had started already. I just saw a traile rand I see it doesn't start until Friday, hopefully we can work something out before then.

the recap

Sunday, September 04, 2005

Okay, so tonight was the 'pool playing' night with Nadine, but things didn't really go as expected. We met outfront of Bar Italia around 8:00, sitting on a bus-stop bench. That lasted a while, then we figured we'd move to a seat on the patio. There we sat, until next I asked her what time it was and it was 1:30am, and kinda chilly out. We walked the block and a half back here to grab some jackets, then set off for the walk to her place. I just to home a few minutes ago.
I'm even more glad that I ended up saying hi to her yesterday.
So far so good.

shell? what shell?

Friday, September 02, 2005

Some of you may recall my survey question to you all about ways to start a conversation with a girl on the bus who always has headphones on. Her and I have been on the same bus since I started taking the bus, back in May. We've always sorta traded glances and smiles, but nothing more. Well. This morning, as I'm walking down the street and around the corner to the second bus stop on my way to work and I see her standing in the bus stop. Okay, that's normal enough. So I walk down Portage to the stop and as I usually do, read the front pages of the newspapers in the dispensers. I look up and notice that she's gone, then glance towards the street and see that my (and her) bus had arrived! Luckily it was stopped at the red light there. I hopped on, and walked to the back of the bus to sit in my normal seat. Now usually her and I sit at the back of the bus, on two of the opposite-facing seats. Today however she sat in a regular seat (these details are important, as will be explained later). The bus gets going, and I notice that she's not wearing headphones. A few stops go by, and eventually the seat directly infront of her becomes vacant. So, I actually get up and plop down on the seat infront of her, turn around and introduce myself (anyone who knows me will know that's a fair step for me). I had resolved to introduce myself to her and possible arrange for another meeting next week, as it'd be my last week on the bus. So we got to talking, and apprently she was glad that I said hi, becaus as it turns out, in the course of the conversation with her on the bus she mentioned that today was her last day.
So, back to the details I mentioned were important. 1) Had the light been green, and I ended up missing the bus, none of this would have happened. 2) Had we taken our normal seats, it would have been much more difficult to start a conversation, as we'd be sitting facing each other across the aisle down the centre of the bus. Also, the back of the bus is much noisier. 3) If I would have waited until next week, she would have been gone, and I probably would have never seen her again.
So we traded numbers, and she dropped by my office at the bank later that afternoon after doing some banking, and we set up some time to play pool. I'm soooo bad at pool it's not even funny.

tag i'm it?

Thursday, September 01, 2005

Okay, so Christielli over at Permanent Title Currently Under Construction has 'tagged' me, so I think that means I have to list 5 things people might not know about me (thanks Christielli!)? This is going to be tough, let's see what I can do...

5. For some reason, sometimes when I'm sitting at the computer I have the Shopping Network on the tv. While I'm not really watching, I find it entertaining to have it on and see the people hocking their wares, and extolling every little feature of some stupid clock radio.

(This is harder than I thought)

4. Even though I have no extra holes or ink, and look pretty 'normal', I'm a sucker for a girl who's pierced and/or tattoed.

3. I usually shower at night before bed, then when my alarm goes off at 7am during the week I turn on my radio, and get back into bed and lie there for as long as I can until I absolutely *have* to get out and get ready for work. I also never eat breakfast.

2. I'm too apathetic for my liking, but am not sure how to fix that.

1. Most times I hate meeting someone new, because I see it as so much work getting to know someone new. This can be mitigated if the new person has plenty in common with me. However, this doesn't happen too often, and causes me to sometimes not even bother wanting to get to know new people.

Okay, so these aren't that great, but they're the best I could come up with under the circumstances (it's kinda late and I'm kinda sleepy) I think I shall tag Bryan and let him go next!
