I'm currently listening to Neil Young's 'protest album', Living with War. I'm not really a fan of his music, but this is actually a pretty decent album so far. He has it streaming for free at his site.

Last night was Jennie (my roommate)'s going away party. There were more people in my house than ever before, 2 or 3 of which I actually knew. Thankfully nothing got broken, or at least I haven't noticed anything broken yet.
The caveat to last night, was that I had to get up for 9am again for another round of garage roof repair. This time it was the application of shingles. We got finished at 5:30 this evening. My mom brought the dog, and was nice enough to make my dad an I some lunch. Witness the so-very-very-very-near complete results. The cap on the top requires 2 or 3 more shingles to finish it, so those will be done when time permits.

The second picture I want to post is from a bulletin I recently saw in myspace. ISN'T THIS DOG SO FREAKING CUTE?!

So tonight I tried out my lawnmower. The nice thing is that I can listen to my ipod and cut the grass at 10pm and no one can care, since it's quiet.

I remembered that thing I forgot to blog about yesterday. Yesterday my boss came into my office, closed the door, sat down, and eventually told me that due to language issues I'd be the one to have to find a position somewhere else.
Now, to be fair there is a lot of support from the organisation for me to find a new position, I don't have to worry about being out of a job. There's going to be a position open at the branch where the new account manager is coming from, but I'm not sure I want to go there. I also feel like if I say no to that position, I'll seem picky. Meh, whatever. A friend of mine works for Cambrian Credit Union and he told me there are 2 positions open in his branch, so I suppose there is that too. That being said, it'd feel weird to leave such a great organisation as RBC for a small fish like a credit union.

Who wants to move with me to the UK and start over there? That could be fun, eh?

I found out today that there's someone in my city that I'd like to stalk. Zooey Deschanel. That's right. Zooey. She's here filming some movie with some other guys. I should like to find out where. That's her over on the left there.

I had more that I was going to blog about, but I seem to have forgotten it. That's annoying..

oh right! There's poetry on the buses now :) Well, inside the buses. Up on the place where ads usually are. I plan on trying to get a picture of one sometime, but they're very cool. So far they're only on some buses, I hope they're rolled out to more, if not all of the buses. It's all about Manitoban poets, so they're goodstuff.

#301

Sunday, April 23, 2006

So I just noticed now that my last post there was post #300. Go me.

Today was day 2 of the garage project. The goal for today was to raise the rafters of the garage to eliminate that bow that the roof had developped. This was partly accomplished with a jack from my dad's van, and multple pieces of wood, a hammer, some nails, a saw, and a ladder. We did about 6/9 of the rafters today, more next week. But as you can see, the roof already looks better. After on top, before on bottom:

I also got my dad to drive me to Sport Chek, because I saw they had a big sale on last year's model bikes. But, when I got there they were all out. So instead I had him take me to Home Depot to buy a lawn mower:

After we were done for the day, and went back in the house to check out what my mom had sent with my dad, and it was this:

It's a mini-donut cake!! You know, those ridiculously delicious mini donuts which can be found at any fair/festival worth its salt. The best thing about this picture is that the min-donut cake box is sitting on a box of a dozen Tim Hortons cookies, courtesy of my dad. Donut overload!

And thankfully my sunburn doesn't hurt too bad, only when I forget my arms are burnt and scratch away as if they were fine. I bought some sunblock last evening so I could protect my poor arms today. It seems to have worked, as they don't look any more burned. Thanks for your concern Laura :P

Le sigh... tonight is the Death Cab for Cutie/Franz Ferdinand concert. And me without my ticket. Oh well, I'll just wait until Death Cab comes on its own tour, so I won't be competing for tickets with people wanting to see another band.

So, the big day of the garage-roof-shingles-ripping-off. Everything started out swimmingly, my dad was up there with the shovel lifting off the shingles.
Some explaining is in order. The garage has a lean-to addition on one side. The shingles came off of there without any problem. Now, when he got to the garage part of the roof, a discovery was made.
Whomever put this layer or shingles on, was nice enough not to remove the old ones. Now, that might not be a big deal if they werent' these weird, diamond-shaped shingles, with each one having upwards of 8 nails in it. Again, not a big issue if they could just be lifted out, but these shingles were old and brittle, so they just broke. Arg. Anyways, we were outside from 9am until 3pm. The next step is raising the roof beams to re-straighten the roof.
In any case, we did get it done. Witness, below:

Upon coming back in the house for a much needed shower, I noticed the following:

I had burned :(

ahhh playoff hockey is back! Two years hence!
I just witnessed a heartbreaking loss:

Edmonton vs. Detroit.
Second overtime period.
58 shots on Edmonton's goalie Roloson.
over 110 shots in total fired at the Edmonton net.
2-2.
Crappy goal deflected off of an Edmonton player.
3-2.
Doh.

Oh well, first game, first round. They've got plenty of time.

Ottawa won, which was good to hear. At least this year they don't have the dreaded Toronto-elimination curse to worry about.

I'm not a hockey nut or anything, but there's something about playoff hockey that makes it nice and exciting.

Tomorrow my dad's coming over and we're taking the shingles off the garage roof and seeing about fixing a little sag in it. Should be fun... well, at least he's bringing McDonald's breakfast.

I got my "United States of the Internet" poster from diesel sweeties today, yay! I'll picture it later.

Apologies AGAIN for the lack of updates. There's no real reason, and I have no excuse other than laziness. But, aha, inspiration.

[insert picture here of me sitting there, once I put new batteries in my camera so I can transfer the file]

This weekend has been utterly gorgeous in Winnipeg. Between 20-24*C for most of the time, and completely sunny without rain. This is how I wish summer would stay. I don't need it to get any closer, or above 30*C. As I type this I'm sitting out in the sun porch that makes up the front of my house, on the futon that's in it, enjoying the sun and the breeze that smells like summer. Got the tunes playing on my laptop, and my parent's dog (who's visiting for the weekend while they're in exotic Dauphin) lying here beside me. The cat, is somewhere in the house. She's not scared of him anymore, but he is very cautious around the cat.

A couple of things:

1. I need to get a bike, but a used one because I am cheap and not willing to pay for a new one.
2. I have an old dryer that's been sitting in the back yard since last November. Does anyone have any creative ideas how it could be used? NB: I do have a deck back there as well, so I was thinking it could be fashioned into some sort of thing around entertaining outside.
3. I should get some kickass sorta windchimes.
4. I have a scar on my arm from where my roommate was playing cutting me with a plastic knife, way back when we were a couple (high school and the year following).

Anyways, time to go google "things to do with an old dryer", and get my glasses so as to better spy on the neighbourhood.

Yes I know I haven't posted anything in a while, I blame that on laziness, and the arrival of spring. It's been so nice out here lately! I even bought a rake, and raked my yard. I didn't know I had it in me!
Today my dad and I replaced the faucet on my kitchen sink, because the old one was leaking all over the place.
I'll try for a more substantial post this weekend.
YAY! long weekend!

lament for the muskox

Tuesday, April 04, 2006

Some of you may recall last year, a news story about an abandoned muskox baby who was named Chance. I admit, I was captivated by his story, and his cute little picture. Well, he died! :( I'm just going to copy the cbc.ca story instead of summing it up myself. The picture is also from cbc.ca.

Chance, the baby muskox foundling that captured the hearts of people across the North last year after he was found abandoned on the tundra, has died at a Yukon game farm. Officials with the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, Chance's home for the last 11 months, said the young muskox died last Friday, of apparent liver failure.

"I am told from the necropsy that he had an enlarged liver and a discoloured liver," said the president of the operating society for the preserve, Cary Gryba. "And that would indicate problems with possible liver failure.

"But until we're able to have a complete series of test results from the southern laboratory, we won't know with 100 per cent certainty what the cause of death was."

Gryba said staff at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve are in shock over his sudden death.

"It's difficult, we've nurtured and adopted him from the time he was just weeks old," he said.

Chance was brought to the game farm last May after being found abandoned on the tundra near Cambridge Bay. Officials cut through red tape in all three territories to expedite the animal's transfer from the Arctic community to the game farm outside of Whitehorse, 1,700 kilometres away.

There the baby was to join a small herd of 15 other muskox, but instead befriended another orphaned animal, a baby caribou called Bou.

Gryba said Chance's death is going to be difficult for everyone, especially for Bou.

"I'm sure that there is still some form of animal separation anxiety," he said. "We hope with love and attention, Bou will move through that too."

Chance, who was believed to be about two weeks old and was just knee-high when he was found, soon became a star attraction at the wildlife preserve.

At the time of his arrival, the preserve received e-mails and phone calls from people across Canada and the United States offering to help fund his care.

Muskox, which resemble bison, are more closely related to sheep and goats, according to the website Hinterland Who's Who.

I'm such a sucker for animal stories, and this one's so sad... poor little now-lonely Bou.

roundup ready

Monday, April 03, 2006

Yes, I haven't updated in a while.
You know what pisses me off to no end? When I plug in my iPod, and for some godforsaken reason iTunes doesn't recognise it. I freaking hate that. I have no temper for technology that doesn't work as it's supposed to. Some things I just can't abide.
My tattoo's nice and flaky, I'll save everyone a picture.
I discovered yesterday, while reading a newspaper that was left on the bus that Rob Zombie released a new cd! He's one of my guilty music pleasures, that I don't feel the least bit sheepish about enjoying. Hellbilly Deluxe stands out as one of my favourite albums.

There, now iTunes sees my iPod... damn thing.
That's about it really. Still no news on my impending job transfer, though the boss is back tomorrow so I'm sure news will start to flow.
I bought a shirt the other day from www.whiteninjacomics.com
It is picture above, left.
