Just a short update, CBC posted a story online about Canada as an 'Olympic powerhouse', and noted what it would have taken for Canada to actually reach it's aggressive 25 medal goal. Including:

  • Short-track speed skater Eric Bedard not been denied by 4-1,000ths of a second in the men's 500.
  • Skier Kelly VanderBeek not finished 3-100ths behind the bronze medallist in the women's super-G.
  • Francois Bourque not missed the podium by 76-100ths in the men's giant slalom.
  • Pierre Lueders not lost out on a medal by 9-100ths of a second in four-man bobsleigh.
  • Canada's men's hockey team won even a bronze medal
By the way, comments rule! Thanks guys!

EDIT: 14 4th place finishes, and 42 top 10 finishes. The best thing about that is the vast vast majority of those top finishes are young folks, and will be back with a vengeance for Vancouver.

Yeah I haven't updated in a while. So Canada finishes with 24 medals, that's not half bad, considering the stretch estimate was 25. And it should be 25, stupid hockey. I also think Canada had more 4th place finishes than any other country. That picture is Clara Hughes, one of the pair of Winnipeg girls that have been absolutely killing at these games. Cindy Klassen being the other, FIVE medals in one games!

I need new sleeping pants, my current regular pair is getting more worn than I'd like. Nadine bought me a Birthday Massacre t-shirt, but I forgot it with her and I don't have it here to take pictures. I also bought a 'retro' CBC t-shirt from cbc.ca, which I should picture the same time I take those of the Birthday Massacre one.

Not much new to report here, RSP season is almost finally over, so work will stop being as crazy as it has been and will be for the first few days next week.
Have you made your 2005 contribution?

happy birthday

Last night was the Birthday Massacre show. There were less people there than I anticipated, thusly it was a pretty great show. Nadine got a bunch of great pictures, all of which are available on my flickr site under the tag 'birthday massacre'. If you've never heard the band, I recommend you click on the title of this post and visit their site, where you can listen to a few songs. I suppose I would describe their sound as '80s-inspired horror pop'. Some of the songs are pretty synth-heavy, and I couldn't help but be reminded of an 80s sound.

I just found out today that the City and Colour show is sold out. Goddamned teenage girls.

So Death Cab for Cutie tickets went on sale today at 10am at ticketmaster.com today. I was at work and didn't have time to buy tickets until 10:05.

They were sold out.

It was an awful repeat of the pre-sale process, though I was there at the exact moment they went on sale, refreshed my browser and they were sold out.
So, that means no concert for me unless I pay an exorbitant price to some fucking idiot.

one more night / that was a good one

During my several hours of personal web surfing at work I happened to stumble across this little gem of a story on the international cnn site. Some of the hilights:

- Of more than 2,500 university and college students polled across Canada, 87 percent of them are having sex over instant messenger, Webcams or the telephone, according to results of a national survey released on Monday.

- Some 2,684 students from more than 150 university and college campuses across Canada took part in the survey. Fifty-one percent of the participates were female and 49 percent were male.

- Of those surveyed, 53 percent of students enjoyed sex over instant messenger, while 44 percent did the deed using a Webcam and over the phone.

- When it comes to having actual sex, eighty-seven percent of those polled claimed to be sober at the time.

Pretty interesting, lol. I thought I should share.

radical radicalism

Saturday, February 11, 2006

When I woke up the other morning to a story on Canada A.M. to a story about a university newspaper that published those same cartoons that have incited so much hatred in Europe I was at first concerned. Could the same thing happen here? Would there next be violent protests by the large Muslim communites in such places as Montreal? Probably not, and I found a great article today on The Globe and Mail.

"It's a shift, for Canadian Muslims, that has not happened anywhere else."

Mohamed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, said violent demonstrations simply aren't a fit with the Canadian Muslim community -- which, because of Canada's immigration requirements, he said, is the most highly educated Muslim community in the world.

"They would find legal and peaceful means of protest far more productive," said the imam and professor at the University of Waterloo. "With demonstrations, you cannot have full control over who does what."

The full text is here.

In other news I just learned that Dallas Green's band City and Colour is touring this spring, with a stop in Winnipeg! I'm looking forward to that show, since most, if not all of his music is just acoustic. Check here for when the show's coming to your place.

all of tomorrow's parties

As Christielli's doing, I too am watching the Grammys. And man they suck, the state of 'popular' music is so sad. Fall Out Boy nominated for Best New Artist? Last I checked they weren't new. Anyways I'm sooo excited about some new changes coming down the pipe for Winnipeg Transit. According to the newest budget, we're getting some huge improvements, such as:

-20 new diesel-hybrid bendy-buses for some of the busiest routes
-real-time bus schedules will be available through on-street electronic displays, wireless devices, Telebus and the Winnipeg Transit website
-140 more new, normal buses
-renovations to 160 bus stops, including heaters
-additional diamond lanes, queue-jumpers and transit priority signals will speed buses along major routes
-an automated fare collection system, including new fare boxes, automated transfer dispensers, off-board ticket machines, and smart cards which will replace antiquated equipment

Since I regularly take some of the major routes to work and back, I'm looking forward very much to these improvements, especially the schedule available on the on-street displays, but even more so on my cell phone web browser

I realise it's been some time since I posted anything, and 8 comments on my last post is a record! Even though 2 of them were from me. Work's been crazy busy since it's RSP season so my days are usually booked solid with appointments.

We got a new tv channel this week, OMNI.11. It sucks.

My stars appear to be aligning (minor, awful pun intended). I found out thismorning that Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab for Cutie are coming to play here in April! I'm not that excited about Franz, but hello, Death Cab is coming!
Just last night at the bus stop I was thinking that I've seen Stars, but I'd probably not get to see Death Cab, due to their american-ness. But, yay!

Wow Stars was an AMAZING concert tonight. We had some not-great seats behind the soundboard guy, but that didn't really matter. They played about 15 songs from the setlist, then came back for 3 more encore songs. By virtue of being behind the soundman we could see the setlist, and I was sad that Calendar Girl and Celebration Guns weren't on the list. Thankfully Calendar Girl was the last song they did during the encore. One hell of an awesome concert. Those guys have some amazing voices live. I picked up a shirt and a pack of buttons. I also noticed that there was a very high volume of good-looking girls at the show, Stars have some pretty fans.
I bought some rechargable 'high drain' batteries, thinking that they'd be perfect for my digital camera. Well They lasted for 2 pictures, with no flash. What pieces of shit. I'm very tempted to take these right back to Futureshop for a refund. What shitty batteries. And yes, I charged them first, overnight. The charging light was off.
So, the only picture I got was from my cell phone. You can kinda see Stars on the stage.
